What makes one piece of cardboard worth $64,000 in 2022 and $329,400 this weekend? Same player, same card, same grade. Heritage's Fall Sports Auction in Dallas pulled in $25.6 million from more than 4,200 bidders, and a 1960 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 9 sold for $329,400, more than five times the old record of about $64,100. Only 31 have ever earned a 9 and none grade higher. A 1963 Topps Mantle PSA 9 also set a record at $317,200, and a 1952 Topps Willie Mays brought $292,800.
I break down why the money follows scarcity plus trust: how PSA, Beckett, SGC, CGC, TAG and HGA grade, how JSA, PSA/DNA and Beckett authenticate autographs, why "a witness beats looks right," and how Credabilia's credibility score uses your evidence to help you sell without sending items in.
